About us
Springfield First United Methodist Church is one of the historical churches of Methodism--and indeed of any sort or denomination--in our area, founded less than 20 years after the city of Springfield itself. Over the decades the congregation has experienced many shifts and changes--but the constant that's remained is our devotion to Jesus and sharing the good news of his Gospel: the redeeming love of God for all of creation.
United Methodists share many beliefs in common with other Christian denominations: salvation in and through Jesus Christ, the realization of God's love through the activity of the Holy Spirit, the universal nature of the Church, the reign of God as both a present and future reality, the authority of Scripture in matters of faith, justification by grace through faith, and an awareness that the Church is always in need of renewal.
Where United Methodists are unique stems from our Wesleyan heritage and a focus on practical divinity: the implementation of genuine Christianity in believers' lives. This can be seen in our emphasis on grace and the various ways it's experienced, the connection of faith and good works, the insistence that personal salvation always involves mission and service to the world, and the nurturing and serving function of the Christian fellowship.
